Description:This is an easy film to like though not a total success. Bogdanovich goes to great lengths to manoeuvre the characters into position so that the comic set-pieces can unfold, but often runs out of energy before he can build much momentum. Still, it's fun to watch the actors explore the limits of the farce form, which demands precision yet leaves limitless room for eccentricity. But this is getting things back to front: Wilson serves much the same function he did in Woody Allen's Midnight in Paris, bringing his patented eccentric speech rhythms to the formalised dialogue. Bogdanovich is an eccentric in his own right, and the film is held together by his sensibility, which is romantic in a knowing yet unapologetic way. Izzy describes herself as a "muse" rather than a sex worker, and while she's a deluded comic character she's also not entirely wrong.
